Treatments for Anxiety

At the  Hampshire Anxiety Clinic in Chandlers Ford, we are able to offer a number of different therapies and evidenced based treatments. These are all focussed in their own particular way. For worry, stress, fears, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder (ocd) trauma, panic, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder (Ptsd). Our anxiety treatments assist by providing a variation of interventions that target particular areas to reduce unwanted anxiety and anxiety symptoms. From our experience and what clients discuss with us about previous therapy they have experienced. Clients share how much they enjoy the flexibility and choice of experiencing different ways of working.

The advantage of these treatments for you, is that we are able to provide a bespoke treatment plan that is tailored to suit your particular aims and goals of therapy.

From the initial contact via email or taking advanatge of our 30 minute complimentary telephone consultation, you will have all the required information to make a clear and informed decision about your direction of therapy. Immediately in our first session we will review the current problem, then discuss the appropriate treatment options and begin the process of change. Sessions usually last up to an hour and a half. Luckily for many types of anxiety we do not need to know how they began. There are particular tendancies and traits of thought, feelings and behaviours that maintain the anxiety. By learning how to disrupt these patterns and at the same time develop new understanding and skills, you can reduce the anxiety and increase self-esteem and confidence.

Neuroscience and nutrition

 

To succeed with reducing anxiety, it is not just about how we think and use our thoughts. There is a clear interaction between what we think, our brain and specific areas,  our nervous system, our physiology and the food we consume.  Along with the effectiveness of traditional therapeutic methods, Mike brings science into his work, using neuroscience and brain based therapeutic treatments.

Mike provides an explanation on how the brain responds to the spectrum of stress and anxiety.  Explaining what occurs in specific regions of the brain and what areas become over activated and how this shows up in behaviour and particular thinking styles. 

Understanding that there is a clear Biological, physical, social and psychological interaction with anxiety Mike shows you how to use specific parts of your brain to neutralise irrational anxiety.

Understanding how and when to apply particular techniques, Mike shows you how to facilitate these and combine these into your routine so you can be actively working on reducing unwanted anxiety symptoms.  Psycho-educational materials are used to show how the body naturally responds to stress , and then particular strategies are provided to begin the process of re learning the biology of the brain and body to respond more resourcefully.

Naturally these are tailored to meet each clients specific need.

NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming is an extremely effective therapy to create immediate changes. NLP contains three fundamental areas, the ' neuro' part which is how our brain and bodies are maintained; the 'linguistics' is how we represent our experiences through the use of language and its structure, and lastly 'programming'. This is how the structures of our communication through the use of imagery, sounds and feelings guides our patterns of behaviours and responses. It is by working with these structures that you begin to develop the flexibility and capacity to update and enrich your beliefs and behaviours that were not so useful, into patterns that achieve success and excellence in any of the areas that you wish too.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis is a positive state where through skilled communication I guide you to become more relaxed physically and mentally, to feel at ease in yourself. Yet at the same time you are mentally awake and in full control of your mind and free will. The words I use enable a state of creative focus in a relaxed way and in line with the goals of your therapy, your subconscious mind becomes more focussed, receptive and creative to allow for therapeutic change to take place at a subconscious level. At this level you are able to begin re-framing problematic events, develop the ability to let go of critical, defeating thoughts. At the same time facilitating changes in your attitudes and behaviours, in a calm confident resourceful state. Traditional methods of hypnosis are used along with Eriksonian methods of using metaphor.

CBT

Cognitive behavioural therapy is an evidence based treatment approach. One of the core ideas of CBT is how emotional reactions and behaviours are influenced by cognitions - thoughts. So it is how thoughts affect feelings and how these affect behaviours and your physical state. Using CBT interventions allows the opportunity to work with the levels of negative automatic thoughts, dysfunctional assumptions and core beliefs, updating the old patterns of thinking and maintenance processes that kept the problem going, into new and more useful ways of thinking that generate the required behaviours.

EMDR

Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing was created and developed by Francine Shapiro. EMDR is an extremely successful and effective treatment for trauma anxiety, stress and disturbing experiences with the goal of reducing your distress in the shortest period of time. The therapy stimulates information in the brains processing system, transforming your emotional health and works towards resolution of negative experiences. Moving you beyond your current limitations.

Anxiety Counselling and Psychotherapy

Both Counselling and Psychotherapy are talking therapies and can be short and long term. Within these sessions the focus is on the areas you wish to discuss, enabling you to develop the skills for effective change and deeper understanding. Both are extremely useful therapies to alleviate psychological distress. Mindfulness and Stress reduction techniques

Mindfulness, is described in many different ways and one way of thinking about it, is it means awareness. Though the awareness is in the present moment, with self compassion and without judgement. We include this particular practice in our therapies as it helps to develop awareness to the very moment of inner and outer experience. This awareness is available to us all, used anywhere and at any moment we choose. Learning how to negotiate from a negative thinking style towards thoughts that are more resourceful, purposeful and positive.  Mindfulness is very effective as it allows us to focus to the present moment, this can stop and disrupt the pattern of anxious thinking, associated feelngs and behaviours that may perpetuate the anxiety. How often have you found yourself worrying about the future, or a particular past event?  MIndfulness allows you to develop the skill of re orientating your thinking into the present moment.

Mindfullness develops the ability to take a step back from your thoughts, rather than running with the 'auto pilot' of thoughts and reacting, the skill of choosing your thought and responding (not reacting) will provide you with empowerment and choice.

Unhealthy levels of stress undermine the immune system, thus we can feel run down, low mood or finding it difficult to think straight and make decisions. There is significant research showing how mindfulness has been linked to increasing emotional intelligence, reducing anxiety and stress, this has an effect on reducing the stress hormone we call cortisol, thus benefiting and improving the immune system. 

The Mindfullnes Clinic Chandlers Ford

In addition to private treatments for anxiety, very soon  The Chandlers Ford Mindfulness Clinic will be available, this will be specifically for Groups of about 6 - 8 people. The weekly mindfullness groups will take place in Chandlers Ford and are they are also an ideal opportunity to come and learn about mindfulness.
